FSC-Harvard Fellowship

FSC-Harvard fellowships support advanced work in film, video, photography, and sound – from the ethnographic to the experimental – that explores and expands the expressive potential of audiovisual media, especially through nonfiction.

FSC-Harvard fellowships are generally open only to Harvard faculty, graduate students, teaching assistants, staff, and postdoctoral and research fellows. Applicants must be affiliated with Harvard during the fellowship year for which they are applying. (We will consider applications on a case-by-case basis from filmmakers and artists who are not currently affiliated with Harvard, but who will be residing in the Cambridge area through external professional appointments during their fellowship year. Non-affiliated filmmakers should contact us before applying to discuss their applications and get an exception for submission.)

These fellowships include:

  • Access to production equipment
  • Access to post-production facilities
  • Technical support
  • Monetary awards in some cases, to help defray production or post-production expenses, typically ranging between $1,000 and $5,000
  • Inclusion in the FSC community of filmmakers, including screenings, workshops, and work-in-progress critiques.

Note that the Film Study Center encourages applications from those working in 16mm film, and can provide cameras and Steenbeck editing flatbeds capable of both regular and super 16. In general, production equipment is available to fellows summer through spring of the fellowship year and postproduction equipment is available fall through summer of the fellowship year.

Central to the FSC-Harvard fellowship is participation in the monthly meetings of the Nonfiction Workshop. At these meetings, fellows have the opportunity to present works in progress (anything from rushes to rough cuts to fine cuts) and receive feedback and critiques from other fellows. In the absence of extraordinary circumstances, participation by all FSC-Harvard fellows is expected.

Fellowships are made annually for one academic year’s tenure. Fellows may apply for continued affiliation through the normal application process the following year, though they are only eligible to be considered for additional funding up to a maximum total award of $5,000 from the FSC over the duration of their fellowship.

The application deadline for 2026-27 FSC-Harvard fellowships is February 13, 2026 at 11:59pm.
