Ernst Karel and Veronika Kusumaryati’s “Expedition Content” Begins Theatrical Screenings

Still from Ernst Karel and Veronika Kusumaryati’s Expedition Content

Ernst Karel and Veronika Kusumaryati’s Expedition Content is screening this week at Anthology Film Archives in New York from January 7-16 as part of the larger series “Expedition Content’ Expanded: Robert Gardner + Imageless Films.” This series also includes Baliem Valley 1961, short films edited from Robert Gardner’s unused footage from the Harvard Peabody Expedition to Netherlands New Guinea. Ernst Karel was commissioned to construct soundtracks for the films, using the sound recordings taken by Michael Rockefeller during the expedition. This project led Karel to spend hours studying Rockefeller’s recordings, which inspired the conception of Karel and Veronika Kusumaryati’s new documentary film, Expedition Content.

Expedition Content will screen on the west coast as part of Jordan Cronk’s Acropolis Cinema series from Jan 14-22, paired with Single Stream, a 23-minute short by Pawel Wojtasik, Toby Lee, and Ernst Karel.

Expedition Content was recently reviewed in the New York Times by Manohla Dargis and in Screen Slate by Leo Goldsmith.
