Tiff Rekem is an artist and filmmaker working at the intersection of documentary and fiction between the U.S. and Taiwan, where her work explores the politics and poetics of personal and national imaginaries. Previously, she graduated with a degree in Visual & Environmental Studies and Anthropology from Harvard College, where her thesis film Declarations of Love (2022) received the Thomas Temple Hoopes prize, the College’s highest honor for undergraduate research. Declarations of Love is now exhibited on The Criterion Channel of the Criterion Collection. Tiff is currently in residence at Le Fresnoy, France’s national contemporary arts studio.

I don’t know how I ended up there, but the window looked out over a tiny cul-de-sac north of Taipei. Eventually, I started working with the people of this neighborhood, whom I first observed as subjects, as actors in fictions playing themselves. Following events that unfolded behind, however, inside the apartment from which I filmed, I can no longer see my images as they were. This is instead an exploration of the space between sleep, waking, assault, complicity, pleasure, and boredom with images that appear completely unrelated to the experience behind their making.
