Project Description
Stacy Kranitz

FSC Associated Fellow 2026-27
Working within the documentary tradition, Stacy Kranitz makes photographs and films that acknowledge the limits of representation. Her work does not tell the “truth” but is honest about its inherent shortcomings, and thus reclaims these failures (exoticism, ambiguity, fetishization) as sympathetic equivalents in order to more forcefully convey the complexity and instability of the lives, places, and moments they depict.
Stacy has received a Pulitzer Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work. Her photographs are in several public collections, including the Harvard Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, and the National Gallery of Art. She works on assignment for publications including Time, the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, the Atlantic, ProPublica, and Mother Jones.

Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down
Stacy Kranitz
Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down is an essay film that examines the evolving representation of the Appalachian mountaineer, tracing how poverty in the region has been constructed, challenged, and reimagined over time. Through historical archives and contemporary images, this film explores how the camera has served as a witness to hardship, a tool of propaganda, an instrument of oppression, and, at times, a vehicle for redemption.
