SUMMARY:FSC-Radcliffe Fellows’ Presentation: Fern Silva
DESCRIPTION:Fern Silva’s films juxtapose the structures and industries of globalism. He is drawn to subjects that defy national identity through mythology\, mysticism\, and historical accounts\, and his films consider uncanny and animistic approaches to narrative\, ethnographic\, and documentary filmmaking as the starting point for structural experimentation. \n  \nAt Radcliffe\, Silva is editing his first feature film\, Sacred Sights. As lava continues to flow from Kilauea on the island of Hawaii—posing an imminent danger—an existential crisis mounts for native Hawaiians: astronomers plan to build the world’s largest telescope on the burial grounds of their most sacred and revered ancestors. Based on ancient Hawaiian mythology and the observatory’s ability to teach us about the origins of our own galaxy\, Sacred Sights serves as a sonic and visual representation of this complex dichotomy. \n  \nSilva’s body of film\, video\, and projection work has been exhibited at various venues\, including the Berlin\, Hong Kong\, Locarno\, London\, New York\, Rotterdam\, and Toronto film festivals; Anthology Film Archives; Centre Pompidou; Cinemateca Boliviana; MoMA PS1; Museo de Arte de Lima; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and the New Museum. His work has been featured in publications including Cinema Scope\, Film Comment\, Filmmaker magazine\, and Senses of Cinema. He has received support from the Jerome Foundation\, the MacDowell Colony\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and the Wexner Center for the Arts. A faculty member at Bennington College\, he received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and his MFA from Bard College.

SUMMARY:FSC-Radcliffe Fellows’ Presentation: Ja'Tovia Gary
DESCRIPTION:Ja’Tovia Gary is currently at work on her debut feature-length documentary film\, tentatively titled “The Evidence of Things Not Seen\,” which explores notions of family\, memory\, and ancestral inheritance. \n  \nGary is an artist and filmmaker living and working in Brooklyn\, New York. Her work seeks to liberate the distorted histories through which black life is often viewed while fleshing out a nuanced and multivalent black interiority. Her work has screened at such festivals as the Ann Arbor Film Festival\, the Edinburgh International Film Festival\, Frameline\, Inside Out\, and the New Orleans Film Festival. SUMMARY:Screening & Artist Talk: LINEFORK a film by Jeff Silva & Vic Rawlings
DESCRIPTION:LINEFORK (2017)\nRecorded by: Jeff Silva and Vic Rawlings\nSound Design & Mix: Ernst Karel\nFeaturing: Lee & Opal Sexton\nFilmmakers present \nAn immersive meditation on the passage of time and the persistent resonance of place\, LINEFORK follows the daily rituals of an elderly couple living in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains. Now well into his eighties\, Lee Sexton is the last living link to the distant past of a regional American music. A retired coal miner with black lung\, Lee and his wife\, Opal\, continue to farm the land where he was born. Together they face encroaching health concerns and stark economic realities. Recorded over three years\, LINEFORK is an observational film documenting their marriage\, their community\, their resilience\, and the raw yet delicate music of an unheralded banjo legend\, linked to the past yet immediately present.
